Gainax Co., Ltd., commonly known as GAINAX, was a renowned Japanese anime studio that produced original works such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Royal Space Force, Gunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Kare Kano, FLCL, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, and Gurren Lagann. These productions received critical acclaim and commercial success. Neon Genesis Evangelion is reported to have grossed over ¥150 billion or approximately US$1.2 billion. Evangelion is also associated with Hideaki Anno, the award-winning anime director and co-founder of Gainax. Prior to Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gainax worked on stories created in-house. However, they later developed anime adaptations of existing manga like Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou and Mahoromatic. Series produced by Gainax are known for their controversial twist endings. In 1991, 1995, 1996, and 1997, Gainax received the Animage Anime Grand Prix for Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and The End of Evangelion respectively. On May 29, 2024, Gainax filed for bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court, which was publicly announced on June 7.
