Sarnoski will also write with Lars Knudsen, Ari Aster's Square Peg company joining as producer
On Monday, it was announced by entertainment news outlet Deadline that filmmaker Michael Sarnoski will write and direct the movie version of Hideo Kojima 's Death Stranding video game. Square Peg production company, which is run by Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster, is also involved in producing this film.
The movie explores the enigmatic aspects of 'Death Stranding,' which refers to a calamitous occurrence that caused the separation of the living and dead realms, resulting in terrifying creatures emerging in a fractured world on the verge of collapse.
In 2022, Alex Lebovici from Hammerstone Studios was named as the producer for the film that was unveiled by Deadline. Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar were also listed as executive producers at that time. Later on, in December 2023, Kojima Productions officially confirmed their involvement in the project, with A24 collaborating with them on the film. Hideo Kojima also shared his thoughts on the project.
There are a lot of “game adaptation films" out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”
