Eun-kyung Shim, Shinichi Tsutsumi star in November film helmed by Shō Miyake
Yoshiharu Tsuge 's manga short stories "Scenes from the Seaside" ("Umibe no Jokei") and "Master Ben of the Honyara Cave" ("Hanyara-Dō no Ben-san") are inspiring Tabi to Hibi (Travels and Daily Life), a film that will open throughout Japan in November. Shō Miyake ( Small, Slow But Steady, All the Long Nights , left in the images below) is writing and directing the film.
"The movie revolves around a screenwriter named Lee as she grapples with events unfolding in her personal life. During her travels, she encounters an innkeeper called Ben-zō, portrayed by Eun-kyung Shim (Sunny, Miss Granny, Fabricated City) and Shinichi Tsutsumi (The Deer King, live-action Always: Sunset on Third Street, I'll Give It My All... Tomorrow).
Tsuge was one of the first creators of gekiga comics, which were introduced by Yoshihiro Tatsumi in 1957. This genre focused on realism and was intended for adult readers. Tsuge is most famous for his manga "Nejishiki," published in 1968, which is a surreal tale set in post-war Japan.
DQ has released a seven-part series featuring Tsuge's complete works, translated by Holmberg. In Red Flowers, you can find "Scenes from the Seaside" and "Master Ben of the Honyara Cave" in volume two.
In 1998, Teruo Ishii made a live-action version of Nejishiki that was released in North America as Screwed by Panik House.
The manga short story "Lust in the Rain" by Yoshiharu Tsuge inspired a live-action film that was released on November 29th.
