Union states company refused to engage in collective bargaining
On April 21st, the South Korean Webtoon Creators' Association declared their intention to submit a grievance to the Labor Relations Commission against Kakao Entertainment for not engaging in collective negotiations.
Kakao Entertainment is the parent company of Kakao Webtoon, Tapas, and Kakao Page .
On April 11th, the union made a request for collective bargaining with Kakao Entertainment. However, on April 17th, they received a notice of rejection. The union believes that this action by Kakao Entertainment is in violation of Korean labor law and constitutes an unfair labor practice.
According to reports, Kakao Entertainment declared that they do not classify webtoon artists as employees according to the Labor Union Act, which means they cannot participate in collective bargaining negotiations.
Shin-a Ha, leader of the Webtoon Creators' Union, expressed dissatisfaction with the reply, stating that their union was legally established and operational according to the Labor Union Act. In his view, this response was unacceptable and represented the worst possible outcome.
The union has been advocating for talks regarding the possible sale of Kakao Entertainment, emphasizing that creators' rights should be safeguarded during this time.
