From 1990 to 1996, Fujita's "Ushio & Tora" was published in Weekly Shonen Sunday as a manga with 33 volumes. In 1992, it was adapted into an original video anime series. In July 2015, it was turned into a television anime series that was licensed by Sentai Filmworks and streamed by Crunchyroll as it was being broadcast in Japan.
In October 2018, Amazon Japan premiered a TV anime version of Fujita's Karakuri Circus manga. This series was exclusively available on Amazon Prime in Japan and globally. In 2006, another manga by Fujita, Bakegyamon, inspired a TV anime. Additionally, a short story from Fujita's Yoru no Uta collection, titled "Karakuri no Kimi," served as the basis for the Puppet Princess original video anime project.
Shimamoto is well-known for creating the Hoero Pen manga series which revolves around Moyuro Honoo, who serves as an author stand-in for Shimamoto in this and other works. Although it is unclear if Honoo is also the manga artist in the new series, the story began in 1990 with Moeyo Pen and continued with Hoero Pen in 2001. Later, in 2011, it was serialized in Sunday GX magazine as Shin Hoero Pen, which ended with 11 volumes. In 2021, Shimamoto released a new story titled Hoero Pen RRR set during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shimamoto is recognized for his work in extreme comedy genres like Honō no Tenkōsei (Blazing Transfer Student) and Anime Tenchō . He is also the author of Aoi Honō (Blue Blazes), which depicts his own college experiences in the early '80s. Notably, this manga includes fictionalized versions of Gainax's founders.
While both Honō no Tenkōsei and Anime Tenchō were inspired by anime, Aoi Honō led to a live-action TV series adaptation.
