Yukito Kishiro had planned the new series for this year
: Mars Chronicle ( Gunnm: Kasei Senki ) has ended with its 11th and last volume on April 23. It was announced that GUNNM or Battle Angel Alita series will continue with its next installment titled GUNNM : Kikō-Jutsu Senki ( GUNNM : Panzer Kunst Chronicle or Battle Angel Alita: Panzer Kunst Chronicle), which is set to launch in spring 2026.
Kishiro announced in November that he would continue the story of : Mars Chronicle under a new name as a new series later this year. On March 11, the final chapter of this series was published.
The Battle Angel Alita manga was published in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine from 1990 to 1995. It was followed by two prequels - Ashen Victor from 1995-1996 and GUNNM : Other Stories - and then continued with the partial retelling Battle Angel Alita: Last Order in 2001. This series moved from Kishiro's original publisher, Ultra Jump magazine from Shueisha, to Kodansha's Evening magazine due to issues with Ultra Jump.
Previously, Viz Media released both the original manga and Ashen Victor in North America. They also published the initial 15 volumes of Last Order before Kodansha USA Publishing assumed responsibility for publishing the remaining four volumes. Kodansha later released Last Order as omnibus editions. Kodansha USA Publishing began releasing Kishiro's first Battle Angel Alita manga as hardcover 2-in-1 omnibus volumes starting in November 2017, with the sixth volume released in April 2019.
Gally, a mechanical angel in : Mars Chronicle, travels to Mars in search of her origins and uncovering the truth about herself. Kishiro started the manga series in Kodansha's Evening magazine in April 2014. Kodansha USA Publishing released it in English in February 2018. They published the tenth volume on February 18th. After Kodansha's Evening magazine ceased publication in February 2023, the series shifted to Kodansha's Comic Days app.
The movie version of Battle Angel Alita, which was based on the manga series of the same name, was released in February 2019 in several countries including the U.K., Japan, and some Asian nations. It was directed by James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez.
