Cartoon became flashpoint of political controversy when it was 1st exhibited in 2022
In 2022, a controversial cartoon about former Korean President Yoon and his wife was exhibited at the Bucheon International Comics Festival for the first time in three years.
The Bucheon International Comics Festival is happening from September 26th to 28th at the Korea Manhwa Museum in Bucheon. This year's program includes a special showcase of past winners from the Student Comics Competition, including works from 2021 to 2025. One of the winners is Suk-yeol Yoon Train, who won the Gold Prize in 2022.
In the cartoon, there is a train with Yoon's image on it, which is being driven by someone who is commonly seen as his wife, Kim Keon-hee. Inside the train are prosecutors holding swords, while outside are people who seem scared and run away from it.
At the 2022 Bucheon International Comics Festival, a political controversy erupted over a cartoon that was initially showcased. This led the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to issue a warning to the agency responsible for the work, withdraw sponsorship recognition, and reduce government subsidies. Consequently, the work was excluded from exhibitions for the past two years.
The reinstatement marks the cartoon's first public display since the suspension.
On December 4th, 2024, Suk-yeol Yoon announced martial law due to opposition from his government being met with resistance from his opponents. Afterward, he tried to eliminate the National Assembly and apprehend opposition politicians and journalists. However, he was impeached earlier this year.
