Hauser joins Austin Abrams in Zach Cregger-directed September 2026 film
On Wednesday, it was announced that Sony is reviving the Resident Evil survival horror game franchise with a new live-action film adaptation. Paul Walter Hauser has been added to the cast, joining Austin Abrams who was previously announced. Hauser is known for his roles in Richard Jewell, Black Bird, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Meanwhile, Abrams is recognized for his work in Weapons, Euphoria, and Wolfs. ( link ) on March 21 as joining the film's cast.
The film will open in theaters on September 18, 2026.

The upcoming reboot movie is being produced by Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions in collaboration with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead) and Cregger as its co-writers. Robert Kulzer from Constantin, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, Miri Yoon from Woman of the Hour, and PlayStation Productions are among its producers. Nicole Brown is overseeing the project while Dariusz Wolski is serving as its director of photography. According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger's movie will be more faithful to the original games and will take the title back to its horror roots.
Sony previously released films from this franchise. There were four companies vying for the movie rights, which included Warner Bros. and Netflix.
The upcoming movie is the eighth installment of the series. Previously, there were six films that were released from 2002 to 2017, featuring Milla Jovovich as the main character.
The live-action film adaptation of Resident Evil opened in the US in November 2021 and in Japan in January 2022. It is set in the late 1990s and features original characters from various games in the series. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, producer of Resident Evil 4 and Sengoku Basara, oversaw the project.
In July 2023, the newest CG animated movie in the series was released in Japan under the name "Biohazard: Death Island" which is also known as "Resident Evil: Death Island".
In 2024, the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York included Resident Evil from 1996 in its Video Game Hall of Fame.
Resident Evil Village is the eighth entry in CAPCOM 's Resident Evil survival horror game series. The game launched in May 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Stadia) platforms.
On February 27th in 2026, the Resident Evil Requiem (Biohazard Requiem) video game will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Steam.
