Currently, we are experiencing an industrial revolution in our world. However, a new threat emerges that cannot be defeated unless its heart, which is protected by iron, is pierced. This creature infects humans with its bite and creates aggressive undead creatures known as Kabane. On the island of Hinomoto, located in the far east, people have constructed shelters to protect themselves from these creatures. They use a locomotive called Hayajiro, which runs on steam, to transport goods between stations and access them. Ikoma is a boy who lives in Aragane station and helps build Hayajiro. He creates his own weapon named Tsuranukizutsu to defeat the Kabane creatures. One day, while waiting for an opportunity to use his weapon, he meets Mumei, a girl who has been excused from mandatory Kabane inspection. During the night, Ikoma sees Hayajiro going out of control as its staff turns into Kabane. The station is now under attack by these creatures, providing Ikoma with the opportunity he has been looking for to use his weapon.
