During the Industrial Revolution era, a terrifying disease emerged from an unknown source, causing creatures known as "Kabane" to emerge and feed on human flesh relentlessly. The only way to kill these beasts is by destroying their steel-coated hearts. If bitten by one of them, victims are reanimated as undead monsters, doomed to join the ranks of their brethren. Only a few civilizations have managed to survive this chaos, including Hinomoto, where humans built a massive wall to protect themselves from the Kabane hordes. The only way into these fortresses is through heavily-armored trains that are constructed and maintained by young men like Ikoma. Eager to use his new weapon against the Kabane, Ikoma awaits his chance to fight. However, he doesn't realize that it will come much sooner than expected.

The series won the 2016 Newtype Anime Awards for Best TV Anime.
