The Universal Century series depicts a conflict between two factions, Zeon and Earth Federation, over independence from each other. This war has taken place across all continents on earth and in many space colonies and lunar settlements. The Zeons have an advantage due to their use of advanced mobile suits that are humanoid-like. During the course of this conflict, a group of refugees discovers the Federation's latest weapon, the Gundam, while trying to attack Side 7. With the help of Earth Federation soldiers on board the White Base carrier, they attempt to change the outcome of the war or risk failure.

Kidou Senshi Gundam was first published in English by Del Ray Books in 1990. Due to a lack of official romanizations, a number of names were translated phonetically (e.g. "Char" as "Sha", "Zaku" as "Zaks"). A revised edition, which updated these romanizations, was published in a single omnibus by Stone Bridge Press on April 1, 2004.
