In 1983, keiichi maebara and his family relocate from a bustling city to hinamizawa, a small town known for its peacefulness. as keiichi settles in, he makes friends with satoko houjou, rika furude, rena ryuuguu, and mion sonozaki. despite their carefree lifestyle, keiichi discovers that things are not as they seem in hinamizawa. during the cotton drifting festival, keiichi learns about a series of murders and disappearances that have occurred after the event for several years. the villagers call it "oyashiros curse," claiming that those who anger their patron god will be cursed to die or vanish. at first, keiichi dismisses these stories as mere folklore meant to scare children. however, when a murder and disappearance occur after the festival, and his friends refuse to discuss the strange events in the village, keiichi starts wondering if they might be involved in the horrific incidents and if he could become the next victim.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Onikakushi-hen was published in English as Higurashi When They Cry: Abducted by Demons Arc by Yen Press on November 18, 2008 and February 17, 2009, respectively, and also digitally on April 22, 2014. The series was also published in Polish as Gdy zapłaczą cykady: Księga uprowadzenia przez demony by Waneko in one-volume edition in November 2015.
