In 1983, during the summer months, Keiichi Maebara relocated to Hinamizawa, a small village with an idyllic atmosphere. Soon after his arrival, he formed close bonds with his classmates Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Houjou, and Rika Furude. However, beneath the surface of their seemingly perfect lives lurked dark secrets. As the festival season approached, Keiichi learned about the village's local folklore surrounding it. To his horror, he discovered that there had been several murders and disappearances in recent years, all connected to the festival and the village's patron deity, Oyashiro. Despite his attempts to discuss these incidents with his friends, they remained silent and refused to provide any information. As strange occurrences continued to unfold, Keiichi began to question whether he could trust his companions completely. When madness and paranoia took hold of his heart, he found himself drawn into the enigmatic world of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, a story that spans multiple arcs.
Geneon Entertainment USA initially licensed and distributed the first season of Higurashi until their closure in 2007. Funimation later distributed the Geneon release, but dropped the license in 2011 due to poor sales. It remained unlicensed until 2015 when Sentai Filmworks announced that they picked up the series.
