Takaki Toono and Akami Shinohara were childhood friends who had feelings for one another. However, due to certain circumstances, the distance between them grew wider. Despite this challenge, they promised to keep in touch with each other. Although their love remained strong, it was difficult to maintain the emotional connection over long distances. The drama Byousoku 5 Centimeter explores these challenges and follows Toono and Shinohara's journey of trying to be together despite being apart. Despite having spent little time together, they refused to give up on seeing each other again, which unknowingly hurt those around them.

Byousoku 5 Centimeter was published in English as 5 Centimeters Per Second in an omnibus by Vertical Inc. on June 26, 2012; in Brazilian Portuguese by NewPOP in July 2015; and in Polish on March 9 and May 5, 2015, respectively.
