Takaki toono and akari shinohara were two close friends who attended school together. when akaris family was transferred to a different region of japan due to her parents' job, they were separated. however, despite their distance, they remained in touch through mail. years later, when takaki learned that his own family would be moving as well, he decided to meet with akari one last time before they went their separate ways. although they continued down different paths and their contact gradually faded over time, they never forgot the memories of their shared experiences and wondered if they would ever have the chance to reunite.

Byousoku 5 Centimeter was completed on January 22, 2007. The first of three parts was available for streaming on Yahoo! Japan exclusively for its premium users between February 16 and 19. The complete film was released on March 3, 2007.The film won the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
