In ancient times, Earth was hit by six meteorites which resulted in the formation of six moons and left behind an island. Those who couldn't make it to the island sank into the ocean and over time turned into crystals. Over many centuries, 28 crystal lifeforms known as Lustrous emerged from the depths and resided on the island. Led by Kongou-sensei, they must defend themselves against the inhabitants of the moons, called Lunarians, who sought to exploit their valuable bodies for crafting weapons and jewelry. The anime series Houseki no Kuni focuses on Phosphophyllite, a young gem about to turn 300 years old. Despite being clumsy, fragile, and having no discernible talent, they are one of the weakest gems around, unable to contribute much in the fight against Lunarians. However, as the battle with extraterrestrial invaders intensifies, Phosphophyllite discovers that power comes at a cost that no one should have to bear.
In 2015, Houseki no Kuni ranked at tenth on the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings in the male readers category. The series has been published in English as Land of the Lustrous by Kodansha Comics USA since June 27, 2017.
