In the future, there are crystalline beings called gems who live in a world devastated by six meteors. each gem has a designated role to fight against the lunarians, who destroy them to use as decorations. phosphophyllite, or phos, is a young and fragile gem with dreams of helping their friends in battle. however, they are tasked with compiling an encyclopedia due to their delicate condition. after begrudgingly starting this job, phos meets cinnabar, another gem who has been relegated to patrolling an isolated island at night because of the poisonous substance their body produces. seeing how unhappy cinnabar is, phos decides to find a role that both gems can enjoy together. the story follows phos' journey to be useful and protect their fellow gems in houseki no kuni.
