Natsume Souseki was a highly regarded Japanese writer during the Meiji Era. He is most famous for his novels Kokoro, Botchan, I Am a Cat and an unfinished work called Light and Darkness. In addition to being a novelist, he was also a scholar of British literature and a composer of haiku, Chinese-style poetry, and fairy tales. From 1984 until 2007, his portrait was featured on the front of the Japanese 1000 yen note.
