The animation depicts a story set in the distant future following the sudden appearance of a massive fog pillar at the South Pole. This column, referred to as Jam, serves as a portal for an impending alien invasion. To counter this threat, the United Nations established Earth Defense Forces (EDF). Fukai Zero is a registered hero with the EDF's main force and part of the 5th Flight Squadron. His aircraft, Yukikaze (windblown snow), is a highly effective tactical reconnaissance plane responsible for gathering battle information and safely returning it to base. However, during his final mission, Fukai Zero encountered an unknown machine that attacked him.

Sentou Yousei Yukikaze won the Tokyo Anime Award in the OVA category in 2003 and 2006. It also won the Packaged Work Award at the 2003 Animation Kobe Awards. The show's combat scenes were produced with help from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.The series was released on DVD as Yukikaze by Bandai Entertainment from February 17, 2004 to July 11, 2006.
