During Japan's Edo period, which was marked by numerous sword-fighting styles, Shichika Yasuri mastered Kyotouryuu, a distinctive technique that involves using one's own body as a weapon. As the enigmatic leader of the Kyotouryuu school, he lived in seclusion with his sister Nanami until Togame, an ambitious strategist, entered their lives and requested Shichika's assistance in collecting twelve unique swords known as "Deviant Blades" for the shogunate. Although initially uninterested in politics, Shichika agreed to help Togame due to his fascination with her character. However, they faced numerous challenges from powerful adversaries who sought to hinder Togame's mission. To succeed, Shichika and Togame had to form an indestructible partnership as they navigated a treacherous path filled with uncertainty and danger.

Katanagatari is a complete adaptation of Nisio Isins light novel series of the same title with each episode adapting 1 volume. The anime was released monthly, mimicking the release style of the original novels.
