In 2012, Japan was invaded by the Mu, a group of human-like beings from another dimension who possessed blue blood. In 2015, Tokyo experienced an attack from these same invaders, but they were repelled by a weapon known as a Dolem. During this time, Ayato Kamina met Reika Mishima, his classmate, and was later attacked by government officials. However, Haruka came to his rescue, informing him that she had been sent by the Organization TERRA to retrieve him and that Tokyo had been sealed in a temporal rift where time flowed at one-third the rate of the outside world. Ayato escaped from Haruka onto a train and saw Reika again. He later arrived at the Room of Rah, where he followed her to an enormous egg from which the Dolem RahXephon emerged. Upon hearing her sing, his mother appeared on top of the Dolem that had stopped the TERRA Invasion. During the battle, Ayato's mother was injured, and he fled Tokyo Jupiter with Haruka.
