Staz Charlie Blood is a potent vampire who governs the Eastern district of Demon World. Despite popular belief, Staz isn't bloodthirsty or ruthless; instead, he's an otaku fixated on Japanese culture and indifferent to human blood. He delegates management duties to his subordinates while spending his leisure time immersed in anime, manga, and video games.
When Fuyumi Yanagi, a young Japanese girl, stumbles upon a portal into the demon world, Staz is thrilled. However, as he develops feelings for her, his territory experiences an attack, leading to Fuyumi's untimely demise. Transforming into a ghost, she leaves behind a heartbroken Staz who vows to resurrect her so that they can travel together to the human world, something he has always yearned for.
Blood Lad follows Staz and Fuyumi as they embark on a journey with Bell, a spatial magician, and Wolf, a half-werewolf, in search of magic capable of restoring humans' lives.
Episodes 1-3 were previewed at a screening in Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku, Tokyo on June 30, 2013. Regular broadcasting began on July 8, 2013.
