In 1879, during the eleventh year of the Meiji Era, swords were outlawed. This led to a decline in the population of samurais who had long been associated with these weapons. Those who opposed this ban rebelled and caused unrest throughout Japan. To address the increase in criminal activity that resulted from this rebellion, an inescapable lake prison was constructed. Three young men from the Kumoh line were tasked with delivering criminals to their place of confinement. However, there may be more to their mission than what is immediately apparent.
Donten ni Warau was released on Blu-ray and DVD as Laughing Under the Clouds by Funimation Entertainment on August 23, 2016.
