In "Aslan," Shin Kazama is coerced into flying for a foreign nation in exchange for money. The only way he can escape war is by shooting down enemy planes, which means taking lives and facing the aftermath of his actions. Throughout the series, Shin grapples with the moral implications of killing and losing friends as he tries to find a way out of this deadly situation.

Area 88 was published by Central Park Media as three VHS tapes and laserdiscs in 1992. In 2000, the first two episodes were released on DVD. In 2006, ADV Films acquired the license and released a DVD version of the OVA edited into two long episodes. Discotek Media published a remaster of Area 88 on DVD on October 30, 2018.
