Hanamichi Sakuragi is a tall, fire-red haired student with a reputation for his temper. He enrolls in Shohoku High hoping to break his record of being rejected 50 times in middle school and finally get a girlfriend. However, due to his notoriety, he is avoided by most students. Hanamichi's thoughts are now focused on two things: "I hate basketball" and "I desperately need a girlfriend." One day, Haruko Akagi approaches him without any knowledge of his troublemaking and asks if he likes basketball. Hanamichi immediately falls in love with her and blurts out an affirmative. She leads him to the gymnasium where she asks him if he can do a slam dunk. In an attempt to impress Haruko, he makes the leap but overshoots and slams his head into the blackboard. When Haruko informs the basketball teams captain of Hanamichi's physical capabilities, he slowly finds himself drawn into the camaraderie and competition of the sport he had previously held resentment for.
