Edward Elric was an accomplished alchemist at a young age, but he had lost much in his twelve-year life. He and his brother Alphonse attempted to resurrect their dead mother through human transmutation, resulting in the loss of two limbs and Alphonse's soul being bound to a large suit of armor. A year later, Edward was promoted to fullmetal alchemist of the state and embarked on a journey with his younger brother to obtain the Philosophers Stone. This mythical object was rumored to amplify an alchemists abilities by leaps and bounds, allowing them to override the fundamental law of alchemy.
Edward hoped to use the military's resources to find the stone and restore his and Alphonse's bodies to normal. However, they soon discovered that the legendary stone was more than just a tool for amplification; it led them to an epicenter of darkness beyond their wildest imaginations.
Fullmetal Alchemist won the TV Feature Award in the 9th Animation Kobe Awards and was one of the Jury Recommended Works in the 2004 Japan Media Arts Festival in the anime division. As the manga was still on-going at the time, the anime midway through diverged from the manga. This led to it having an anime-only ending, unlike Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood which would air years later. On July 31, 2016, FUNimation Entertainments license to the series expired.
