In 2009, humanity is engaged in a three-way conflict against an alien species known as the zentraedi and meltrandi. the spacecraft macross, which was sent on a mission to earth, has returned after executing a space fold that placed it at the edge of the solar system. during a skirmish with zentraedi forces, hikaru ichijo rescues lynn minmay, leading to their blossoming relationship while stranded within the ship. however, shortly after returning to macross city, minmay is captured by the zentraedi and hikaru and misa hayase find themselves back on earth, witnessing the devastation of their civilization. the only hope for humanity lies in a song discovered eons ago and lynn's voice, which will determine the outcome of the war.
