In an age marked by rapid industrial advancement, humankind faces the threat of a mysterious virus that transforms individuals into mindless creatures known as "Kabane." These undead beings are driven solely by their craving for human flesh and can only be destroyed by damaging their hearts, which are protected within a cage of unyielding iron. As a result, the surviving population has retreated into fortified cities called "Stations," which are isolated from their surroundings by massive moats and towering walls. The only means of communication with other Stations and the outside world are via armored "Hayajiro" trains on a drawbridge. At Aragane Station, Ikoma works as a steamsmith to maintain the city's transportation systems. Despite his role, he feels frustrated with mankind's cowardice and inability to combat the Kabane. To address this issue, Ikoma has developed a new weapon using his engineering skills during his free time. When the Kabane attack Aragane Station, this encounter will serve as more than just a trial run for Ikoma's invention.
