According to information from the Box Office Mojo website, the 4K restoration screening of Princess Mononoke at GKIDS generated approximately US$4,004,482 in revenue during the weekend of March 28-30. This amount placed the film at #6 in its opening weekend.
On Friday, the film made approximately $2,005,910 from its 4K screenings. On Saturday, it generated around $1,083,891, and on Sunday it pulled in about $920,000. There were 330 theaters showing the movie.
To commemorate Studio Ghibli 's 40th anniversary in North America, GKIDS is hosting exclusive 4K restoration screenings of the film at IMAX theaters starting March 26th. Both Japanese audio with English subtitles and English language dub are available for viewers' enjoyment.
Atsushi Okui, who has worked on every major project at Studio Ghibli since 1993, supervised the restoration of the film in 4K resolution. As Director of Digital Imaging on The Boy and the Heron, he played a crucial role in this process.
