In Japan, the movie was released last August. It generated over 608 thousand tickets during its first three days and made approximately 895 million yen (around US$6.28 million). This movie was number one at the Japanese box office when it was launched. Since then, it has sold more than 2.48 million tickets and earned about 3.55 billion yen (around US$23.4 million).
On October 11th, TOHO International began showing the movie in American cinemas. It was offered with both English subtitles and dubbed versions. The film had its North American debut at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on October 6th. Additionally, there were special screenings for the movie held in New York and Los Angeles on October 9th. During its first weekend, the movie made US$3,007,420 at the box office and ranked eighth in the United States.
Director Tensai Okamura of the TV series "Darker Than Black" is back for the film at BONES Studio. Returning staff members from previous films and TV series include scriptwriter Yōsuke Kuroda, character designer Yoshihiko Umakoshi, and composer Yuki Hayashi. Vaundy sings "Homunculus," the theme song for the movie, as well as "Gift," the ending theme song.
Horikoshi was in charge of overseeing the production of the film and designing its characters. The movie has its own unique plot that takes place concurrently with the TV anime series, during which society has fallen into chaos due to war. In the film, a mysterious fortress appears along with a man who looks like the previous "Symbol of Peace," adding to the confusion in a world that has already been torn apart by conflict.
The Plus Ultra Edition of the home video release contains a bonus anime short called "A Piece of Cake." This short is based on a one-shot manga drawn by Horikoshi for a bonus booklet given to Japanese filmgoers.
There have been three movies in the anime series before the release of : Two Heroes in July 2018, followed by : Heroes Rising in December 2019. Then came My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes' Mission in August 2021 in Japan, which was later released in the US in October 2021 and grossed over US$10 million.
The last season of My Hero Academia anime will be released on Crunchyroll in October globally except for Asia where it is being shown simultaneously with its Japanese broadcast.
