40th anniversary remaster to screen at festival's Cinéma de la Plage on May 20
On May 20th at the Cinéma de la Plage event during the 78th Cannes International Film Festival, the world premiere of the 4K remaster of Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) by Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano will take place. This is the first time this remastered version of the 1985 anime film will be shown in public.
This year's festival is taking place in France from May 13 to May 24.
In May 2024, Gebeka International obtained the global distribution rights for the 4K version of the product.
The remaster is based on a new scan of a 35mm film negative of the anime.
In 1985, the first release of The Angel's Egg OVA occurred in Japan. Studio DEEN directed this animated production under the guidance of director Mamoru Oshii. Collaborating with Oshii were Yoshitaka Amano, who conceived the story, and Oshii himself who wrote the screenplay and directed. Additionally, Amano was responsible for the art direction of the film. Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada served as producers for this project. Yoshihiro Kanno composed the music for this animated production.
In September 2023, The Japan Society screened the anime film at their museum in New York City. Before this screening, the anime had not been released in the West in its original form. Carl Colpaert's live-action/animated 1987 film In the Aftermath included footage from the anime.
In May 2024, Tokuma Shoten revealed that they would be releasing a remastered version of their product. GKIDS has scheduled to showcase this enhanced version in North America during the current year.
