Zach Cregger directs September 2026 film

Sony Pictures has announced that Dariusz Wolski will be serving as the director of photography for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Capcom's Resident Evil video game franchise.
The film will open in theaters on September 18, 2026.
Zach Cregger ( Barbarian, Weapons ) directs the new film.
The upcoming horror movie is being produced by Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions in collaboration with director and writer Cregger. Shay Hatten, who previously worked on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, is co-writing the screenplay with Cregger. Robert Kulzer from Constantin, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, Miri Yoon from Woman of the Hour, and PlayStation Productions are among the producers. Nicole Brown is overseeing the project. According to sources, Cregger's film aims to stay true to the original games' horror roots.
Sony has previously released films from this franchise. There were four different studios that were competing for the rights to this movie. Among them were Warner Bros. and Netflix.
The upcoming movie is the eighth installment of the series. Previously released from 2002 to 2017, all six films featured Milla Jovovich as their lead actress.
In November 2021, the first live-action film adaptation of the Resident Evil franchise was released in the United States. This film, set in the late 1990s, featured characters from various games in the series and had an entirely new storyline. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who produced Resident Evil 4 and Sengoku Basara, oversaw this project.
In July 2023, the newest CG animated movie in the series, titled "Resident Evil: Death Island" or "Biohazard: Death Island" in its Japanese version, was released in Japan.
In 2024, the Video Game Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York recognized Resident Evil from 1996 as worthy for inclusion.
Resident Evil Village is the eighth entry in CAPCOM 's Resident Evil survival horror game series. The game launched in May 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Stadia) platforms.
On February 27th in 2026, the Resident Evil Requiem (Biohazard Requiem) video game will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam.
