Although Chise Hatori possesses the ability to perceive otherworldly entities, she does not view herself as fortunate. Her parents forsaking her at a young age led to numerous hardships, ultimately compelling her to sell herself into slavery in order to attain a stable dwelling. Offered to potential buyers as a unique Sleigh Beggy-beings with an exceptional affinity towards magical energies-Chise's last hope materializes in the form of Elias Ainsworth, an enigmatic magus who is more beast than man. Rather than keeping her captive, he has opted to make her his apprentice and spouse. Chise is physically relocated to England where Elias resides, and introduced to a realm in which magical beings such as fairies and dragons are commonplace. However, she soon discovers that there exists an equal amount of fear in this new existence as there is wonder. At the core of it all lies the uncertainty of whether she has unwittingly placed herself under the control of something far more malevolent than her own inner turmoil.

Mahoutsukai no Yome was initially serialized in Monthly Comic Blade, until the magazine changed the format of publication from paper to digital, and moved to Comic Garden starting from the October 2014 issue.The series has been published in English as The Ancient Magus Bride by Seven Seas Entertainment since May 12, 2015; in Polish by Studio JG since March 26, 2015; in German by Tokyopop since October 12, 2015; in Italian by Star Comics since February 24, 2016; in Spanish by Norma Editorial since April 11, 2016; in Russian by Istari Comics since May 24, 2016; in Finnish by Punainen Jättiläinen since December 22, 2016; and in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora Devir since November 27, 2017.
