In 1998, a fifteen-year-old named Kouichi Sakakibara moved to Yomiyama, where he was set to attend Yomiyama North Middle School. However, due to an old injury, he had to be hospitalized and missed the first week of school. After recovering quickly, he met Mei Misaki, a mysterious girl with an eye patch who sparked his interest.
At Yomiyama North, Kouichi was placed in Class 3-3. Despite the seemingly innocent atmosphere, there was something odd about the class behavior: everyone seemed tense and watchful of each other's actions. Mei, being a student in the same class, received little attention from both her classmates and teachers, as if she didn't exist.
As more strange occurrences happened and questions arose, no one was willing to provide Kouichi with any answers. With no other choice, he began pursuing Mei for help, despite her warnings and the disapproval of his classmates.
