The narrative revolves around various individuals with a grudge who utilize Jigoku Tsuushin (Hell Correspondence) to exact vengeance upon those they hold a grievance against. In return, Enma Ai, the female demon from Hell, assumes responsibility for carrying out their revenge desires, but at the cost of spending eternity in Hell following her demise.

Jigoku Shoujo was published in English as Hell Girl by Del Rey Books from January 29, 2008 to October 26, 2010. The first 6 volumes were published separately, while the final three were collected and published as a 3-in-1 volume.
