In the story "El Hazard," Makoto Mizuhara discovers an ancient monument at his school which awakens a beautiful woman. Along with his teacher, worst enemy, and female friend, they are transported to the magnificent world of El Hazard where they receive special powers. In this new world, Makoto and his teacher Fujisawa land in a jungle and save a princess from giant bugs. Meanwhile, Makoto's friend Nanami lands in a desert. However, Makoto's rival Jinnai lands in the middle of the bug kingdom and becomes their general, plotting to destroy Makoto and his new friends. Despite repeated attacks by Jinnai, he eventually learns about an ultimate weapon called Ifurita. Everyone sets out to find her, and when they do, Makoto discovers that she is the same woman who sent them to El Hazard. However, it's Jinnai who gains control of her in the end.
El Hazard: The Magnificent World was formerly distributed in the U.S. by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, whose North American branch was then known as Pioneer Entertainment. In July 2019, Nozomi Entertainment, a division of Right Stuf Inc., took over and rescued the license for the series. In 2001, the series also inspired a role-playing game called the El-Hazard Role-Playing Game released by Canadian company Guardians of Order.
