Ganta Igarashi and his classmates were preparing for a field trip to Deadman Wonderland, a prison amusement park where convicts perform dangerous acts for entertainment. However, their day took an unexpected turn when they were massacred by a mysterious man in red. Ganta was framed for the crime and sentenced to death. He arrived at the very jail he was supposed to visit but his nightmare had only just begun. In Deadman Wonderland, Ganta is surrounded by sadistic inmates and enigmatic powers, living in constant fear of the lethal collar around his neck that can only be slowed down by winning in the prison's deadly games. Ganta must fight for survival in a ruthless place where it is difficult to distinguish friend from foe while trying to find the "Red Man" and clear his name.

Deadman Wonderland adapts the first 5 volumes of Kazuma Kondous and Jinsei Kataokas manga series of the same name. Some characters from the manga were not featured in the anime, notably the then minor character Azami Midou and the gay crossdressing character Masaru Sukegawa.
