During Feudal Japan's Edo period, people were under attack by giant insects who devastated the countryside. The populace pleaded with their government for aid, leading to the creation of the Insect Magistrate Office. This office recruited powerful warriors to defend against the pests. Mushibugyou follows Jinbee Tsukishima, a young man determined to become a skilled swordsman like his father. To make amends for a tragic event, Jinbee aims to take on his father's role in the Insect Magistrate Office. On his journey, he encounters Haru, who runs her family's tea house and is endangered by an insect attack. Jinbee saves her with his sword, earning him a place in the Insect Magistrate Office. Will this newcomer be successful in eliminating the swarm of insects plaguing the land?

Mushibugyou was released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan from July 26, 2013 to March 28, 2014. The series was also published on Blu-ray in North America by Sentai Filmworks on April 26, 2022.A video game adaptation developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment was released in Japan on September 19, 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS.
