Gintoki and his companions join the resistance against the bakufu and go into hiding with Katsura and his Joui rebels. The Yorozuya is later approached by Nobume Imai and two Kiheitai members, who inform them that Harusame pirates have turned on 7th Division Captain Kamui and their former ally Takasugi. The Kiheitai offer Gintoki a mission to find Takasugi, who has been missing since his ship was attacked in a Harusame raid. Nobume also makes an astonishing revelation about the Tendoushuu, a secret organization that controls many factions, and their leader Utsuro, who resembles Gintoki's former teacher.
The Yorozuya and Katsura travel to Rakuyou, Sakamoto's home planet, where various factions have gathered and tensions are escalating. Longstanding grudges, political maneuvering, and the Tendoushuu's nefarious plan finally lead to a massive, decisive battle on Rakuyou.
