A character in the series who was devoted to InuYasha throughout its duration, but ultimately met a tragic end when Naraku (disguised as him) separated them fifty years ago at the start of the story. Despite appearing alive, her body remains "dead," and she must consume souls of deceased individuals to remain mobile. She is later revived by Urasue, an ogress.
She ends up saving Kohaku and Mirokus lives and dies peacefully in the arms of InuYasha after being attacked by Naraku. Her life finally ends by the actions of Naraku, but not before sharing one passionate kiss from Inuyasha and feeling satisfied. Although she does not appear to entirely reciprocate Inuyashas feelings throughout most of their encounters, it is heavily implied they still have feelings for each other. This is made even more complicated by Kagome, who Kikyou is aware has feelings for her lover. Throughout her journey, she retains some characteristics of her former life such as helping those in need and being an older sibling figure while pursuing Naraku.
Her body is made of bones and graveyard soil with most of her soul in her reincarnation. Still under the impression that Inuyasha had betrayed her, she tries to kill him. However, after learning from her sister Kaede that Naraku was behind her death and that he had turned her and Inuyasha against each other, her feelings for Inuyasha return while making plans to destroy Naraku.
