Maes hughes, a beloved character in the series, initially comes across as comic relief but later proves himself to be a skilled fighter with serious intentions. despite this, he remains loyal to his best friend roy mustang and would go to great lengths to help him achieve his goals. aside from being a devoted husband and father, maes is also extremely fond of his daughter elycia and carries pictures of her in his uniform at all times. in the anime, maes starts out as a major in the investigation division before eventually becoming a lieutenant colonel.
