To obtain something, an equivalent value must be lost according to the Law of Equivalent Exchange. This law was discovered by two young brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric after attempting human transmutation, which is forbidden in alchemy. As a result, they paid a terrible price-Edward lost his left leg and Alphonse his physical body. However, through the desperate sacrifice of Edwards right arm, he was able to attach Alphonses soul to an armor suit. Devastated and alone, Edward found hope in returning to their original bodies, which led him to create metal limbs called "automail" and become a state alchemist known as the Fullmetal Alchemist. Three years later, the brothers sought the Philosophers Stone, a mythical relic that could allow an alchemist to bypass the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Despite having military allies such as Colonel Roy Mustang, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes, they were caught up in a nationwide conspiracy that revealed the true nature of the elusive Stone and their country's dark past. Along the way, Edward and Alphonse had to confront difficult questions about whether what they were doing would make them human again or take away their humanity.
