The Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France is set to showcase three anime films during its Midnight Specials category. These include Mononoke the Movie Trilogy: Chapter 2: The Ashes of Rage ( Gekijōban Mononoke Dai-Ni-Shō: Hinezumi ), which is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi ABe 's All You Need Is Kill science fiction light novel; Nightmare Bugs ( Ghost Bugs ), a newly edited version of Saku Sakamoto 's Aragne: Sign of Vermillion ( Aragne no Mushikago ); and The Feast of Amrita ( Amrita no Kyōen ), two anime films from the Mononoke franchise.
In June from the 8th to the 14th, the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival will take place in Annecy, France.
The Western premiere of Mononoke the Movie Trilogy: Chapter 2: The Ashes of Rage is taking place at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.
The film premiered in Japan on March 14.
In July 2024, Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain was released in Japan as part of the Mononoke project's first film. Netflix is currently streaming this film. Originally, it was planned for release in 2023, but it was delayed until 2024.
The third film, Gekijōban Mononoke Dai-San-Shō: Hebigami , will open in spring 2026.
Studio4°C is producing the animated version of All You Need Is Kill, with Kenichiro Akimoto directing. This adaptation differs from both the novel and the film adaptation by Hollywood's Edge of Tomorrow, offering a unique perspective on the story.
In the future, Earth faces invasion from extraterrestrial beings known as Mimics. Despite using armored suits for enhanced combat capabilities, humanity struggles to maintain control over their planet. Keiji Kiriya, a rookie soldier, perishes during his first battle. Posthumously, he experiences a time loop where he repeatedly dies and respawns prior to the conflict. Through trial-and-error, he learns how to increase his lifespan and becomes attracted to Rita Vrataski, an accomplished warrior.
In 2004, Shueisha released the novel. Later on, in 2009, Viz Media published the English translation of the same work as part of their Haikasoru imprint for Japanese science fiction and fantasy literature.
In January to May 2014, a manga adaptation of the novel was released in Shueisha 's Young Jump magazine, featuring artwork by Takeshi Obata (known for his work on Hikaru no Go, Death Note, and Bakuman) and writing by Ryōsuke Takeuchi (the creator of ST&RS). This manga was later published in English by Viz Media.
In 2014, the film "Edge of Tomorrow," starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, was adapted from a novel. It grossed over $100 million in the U.S., $15 million in Japan, and $370 million worldwide. ( link ) .
Last year, Sakamoto's Nightmare Bugs was shown at both Animotion Film Festival in Italy and Philip K. Dick Film Festival in the U.S. It then premiered in Japan on November 17th and 24th at Cinema House Otsuka.
In May 2023, The Feast of Amrita anime film was released in Japan. It was shown alongside a refined version of Aragne: Sign of Vermilion which included at least 60 revised shots.
In July 2018, the world premiere of Aragne: Sign of Vermilion was shown at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal, Canada. This film is now available for streaming on HIDIVE. Additionally, HIDIVE is also streaming another film from the same series.
