On July 17th, Manga Barcelona made public their lineup of guests for their annual event in 2023. Among them are manga artist Gou Tanabe, Wind Breaker manga creator Satoru Nii, Delicious in Dungeon anime food designer Mao Momiji, and Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe. Additionally, Cowboy Bebop theme song artist SEATBELTS will perform at the event, as well as DAN DA DAN second season opening theme song artist Aina The End. Lastly, Witch Hat Atelier manga author Kamome Shirahama designed the poster for this year's event.
For the first time ever, Seatbelts will perform outside of Japan at Manga Barcelona on December 5th. Yōko Kanno, who composed music for Macross Plus, The Vision of Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, among other works, will lead the band and feature Mai Yamane, the original vocalist from Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack. Additionally, Kanno will join Watanabe in a panel discussion about music and anime.
Aina The End is going to make her debut performance in the West at Manga Barcelona on December 6th and 7th. These shows will be her only scheduled performances in the West this year. Additionally, she has sung the ending theme songs for several anime series including The Apothecary Diaries, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain, and Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II - The Ashes of Rage.
This year, H.P. Lovecraft 's manga adaptation of his story "The Call of Cthulhu" was recognized with a Superior Achievement award in the graphic novel category of the Bram Stoker Awards.
Lazarus is the latest anime series that was directed by Watanabe. It has 13 episodes and was shown on Toonami on Adult Swim on April 5th. "Vortex" by Kamasi Washington is up for "Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music" at the Emmy Awards for 2022.
The Manga Barcelona Festival is happening at Fira Barcelona Gran Via from December 5th to 8th this year. Last year, it marked its 30th anniversary and welcomed notable guests such as Naoki Urasawa of 20th Century Boys, Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari of Oshi no Ko, and Shirahama of Witch Hat Atelier, among others.
