During the Edo period, which lasted from 1603 to 1868, a new disease known as Redface Pox emerged in Japan. This illness primarily affected men and within eight decades of its first outbreak, the male population had decreased significantly compared to the female population. As a result, women took on roles traditionally reserved for men, including that of Shogun. To protect these precious providers of life, men were carefully guarded and only the most beautiful specimens were sent to serve in the inner chambers of the Shogun.

Oooku was released on Blu-ray as a two-disc set by Netflix on July 20, 2023. The anime adapts the first 15 chapters of the manga.
