Joe Shimamura and his companions might appear ordinary individuals, but they possess extraordinary abilities as Cyborg 009 and members of a team of cyborgs who dedicate themselves to protecting the world. Each cyborg has unique powers, such as melting any material or breathing and flying underwater. Despite being forcibly modified by the Neo-Black Ghosts organization for their own gain, these eight cyborgs chose to unite and utilize their talents to combat their former oppressors and all evil forces.

Cyborg 009 (1979) is the original adaptation of the first manga to be featured in colour. Come the 1980s, Fuji Television allowed a subtitled English version to air in certain areas of the United States.
