Tomoya Okazaki was a delinquent who found life uninteresting and believed that nothing significant would ever happen. Along with his friend Youhei Sunohara, they skipped school and planned to spend their high school days doing nothing. While walking to school one day, Tomoya heard a young girl muttering quietly to herself. She suddenly exclaimed "Anpan!" (a popular Japanese food), which caught Tomoya's attention. He discovered that her name was Nagisa Furukawa, and she used these exclamations as motivation for herself. Although Tomoya initially dismissed the encounter, he found himself noticing Nagisa more frequently around school. Eventually, he decided to befriend her.
Nagisa had been held back a year due to illness and her dream was to revive the schools drama club. With nothing better to do, Tomoya agreed to help her achieve this goal along with four other girls. As he spent more time with them, he learned about their problems and began to see that life wasn't as dull as he had once thought.
