In the world beneath the earth's surface lies a young girl named Patema who belongs to an underground civilization with an extensive network of tunnels. Driven by her curiosity and inspired by a missing friend, she frequently ventures beyond the boundaries of her kingdom despite facing constant reprimands due to her royal status. During one such exploration, she stumbles upon what is known as the "forbidden zone" and accidentally falls into an enormous bottomless pit after being startled by a strange creature. As a result, she finds herself on the surface of a world turned upside down where she begins falling towards the sky. Fortunately, she is rescued by Age, a disillusioned student from the oppressive nation of Aiga who believes that "Inverts," like Patema, are sinners destined to be consumed by the heavens. Despite this propaganda, Age chooses to protect his new friend and together they embark on an adventure to uncover the mysteries of their origins in Sakasama no Patema, a heartwarming film about overcoming differences to coexist peacefully.
Sakasema no Patema was shown at selected countries like the UK while Cinedigm handled the Blu-ray and DVD releases for North America. Patema Inverted won the Audience Award and the Judges Award during the 2013 Scotland Loves Anime. It was also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film during the 7th Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
