Advancements in technology have led mankind to create human-like robots known as hIEs that serve society as public and personal assistants. While many treat these machines as inferior beings, high school student Arato Endou sees them as equals despite his financial limitations preventing him from owning one. However, his peaceful life is disrupted when he is attacked by a hacked hIE during a grocery store run. Fortunately, an abnormal hIE named Lacia saves him with a weaponized coffin and offers to make Arato her new owner in exchange for his life-saving act. Despite the warning that she lacks a soul, Arato agrees and allows Lacia to live in his home. As Lacia adapts to her new environment, she cautions Arato about the dangers of trusting machines with human emotions.
