In 2013, wake up, girls performed their debut song in front of a small crowd without much fanfare. afterward, the group's manager absconded with the money, leaving green leaves entertainment on the brink of closure and the band uncertain about its future. despite this challenging start, the girls received a second chance thanks to an anonymous benefactor and a questionable business deal. from there, they faced numerous obstacles as they climbed their way to success, becoming small-time idol girl bands competing against other popular pop groups. through their journey, the members learned to accept their pasts and become more confident about their futures. as they gained popularity and stakes, each of the seven girls had to summon inner strength and courage to fully commit to the band.
Wake Up, Girls! was announced by the production company Avex Entertainment, who helmed the series in collaboration with director Yutaka Yamamoto and voice talent agency 81 Produce. The anime was billed as the Lucky☆Star reunion as Yamamoto would once again work with scriptwriter/series composer Touko Machida and MONACA composer Satoru Kousaki. Avex and 81 Produce held open auditions for the voice actresses who would voice and sing as the Wake Up, Girls! idol group and over 2000 candidates auditioned. The anime served as the V.A. debut for the seven eventual winners. In addition, the winners all shared their given name with the character they voiced.
